Eric + Cortney

Providence, the universe, small town living–whoever gets the credit, for the past year everything seemed to (almost eerily) connect us with Eric and Cortney. Though they live in California we managed to bump into them in ways that kept surprising us. I honestly don’t stalk the couples whose weddings we photograph (pinky promise!), but this one sure looked like it.  Por ejemplo:  I (Diana) had already had a great time getting to know Cortney and chit-chatting the night away getting excited about her upcoming wedding.  She’s such a sweetheart.  I hadn’t met Eric yet, which I figured was pretty unlikely to happen since he, oh I don’t know, lived in California.   In February, after a long day of painting, we headed out for an upscale bite to eat at  Johnny T’s Bistro.  The words echoed in my head  “Girl.  Look at you looking like you lookin’. Don’t be going out in those paint clothes; you know you’ll see someone you know.”   Fast forward to me kicking those thoughts to the curb and keepin’ it real… then  finding a cute cell phone in the parking lot of Johnny T’s Bistro. I recognized Eric’s name on the contacts list and gave him a ring. “Oh yeah, this is my mom’s cell phone, and I’m right inside.” Oh ok, I’ll be right in to give it to you, I replied, wondering why he was in the area. And by the way, I’m the photographer for your wedding.  Really.  Yes, the girl coming through the door looking like a hot mess is here to tell you that you hired me to photograph one of the most important days of your life.  And guess what? They were completely cool with it–I don’t think they would have even noticed if I hadn’t been all blushy about it. Smooth.  They put me right at ease which made me ten times more excited to photograph their wedding after seeing Eric and his family. I give that one example (of many) to say this: the way was paved.   Thanks, God, for making things clear that we were supposed to connect with these two.  And thanks for the gift of a fantastic couple like Eric and Cortney… they make celebrating and immortalizing their big day such an honor.

Their 9-10-11 wedding in Hillsdale, MI was beautiful.  While the whole day bustled with excitement, Cortney and Eric were both surrounded by not only super loving family, but tons of friends.  Watch this video below to see a preview from their day, or click here to view/share/order all of the photos from Eric and Cortney’s day!

Count that? TEN knockouts surrounding and supporting Cortney on her big day.

And ten handsome groomsmen, plus two heartbreaking ushers.  You didn’t know ushers could heartbreak, didja? Just look at them all!

Cortney and Eric’s pooch, Murphy, stepped up to the plate and adorably played ring bearer. Being a crazy dog lover myself, I had to tear the camera away from little Murphy and his cute-grumpy-old-man ways.     He stole my heart.

Eric and Cortney chose not to see each other face to face before their ceremony, but they did want to connect.  Cortney had the idea to use a big door allow them to “See without Seeing” each other.  I have never seen two adults look more like kids before Christmas… they were adorable.

The ceremony was held at the College Baptist Church in Hillsdale, MI.  Breathtaking!

Eric’s brother, Ryan and sister, Angela wrote a song for the ceremony.  Poignant and loving, there were few dry eyes in the audience.

After the first reception at the Hillsdale College Dow Center, Cortney and Eric took a break before their second reception at the Historic Dawn Theatre.  The best part of this more laid-back afterparty was the surprise special guest that Eric and Ryan had planned.  Cortney was totally shocked to see Andrew W.K. come out on stage as the main entertainment for her night.  It definitely wins “Best Kept Wedding Surprise” and “Most Rad Wedding Gift” of the year.

Thank you, Eric and Cortney, for letting us be part of your special day.  It has been an honor getting to know you and to get to witness such beautiful lives wholeheartedly dedicated to each other.
